The Blue Economy and the Green Deal.
The Blue Economy deals with all economic activities related to oceans, seas and coasts, in the marine environment (e.g. fisheries, shipping, energy generation) and on land (e.g. ports, aquaculture). Linked to the European Green Deal, and its ambitions in the area of decarbonisation, circularity, biodiversity and zero pollution, the blue economy has a key role to play. Many solutions (renewable energy, plastic-free packaging, low-impact food) will come from the Blue Economy.
Therefore, for the first time, the European Commission is funding the Blue Economy. And, together with the European Investment Fund, during 2021 they expect to flow in total over €300 million into the Blue Economy.
Furthermore, this leaves Portugal (BOLT’s constituent country) in an excellent position to benefit from the fundings as it has the largest sea area in all of Europe.
